let the total number of student be = x

then passed number of student is given by 94% of x =

 \frac{94}{100}  \times x

Number of students failed = 144

Note that sum of the number of student passed is must be equal to number of students appeared

that means

 \frac{94x}{100}  + 144 = x

144 =  \frac{100x - 94x}{100}  \\ 144 =  \frac{6x}{100 \ } \\ 144 \times 100 = 6x \\ 14400 = 6x \\  \frac{14400}{6}   = x \\ 2400 \: students \:

Hope you like it
