The number of ways in which a candidate can fail an examination is equal to 42.

For the candidate to fail the exam , the candidate may either fail in three , four , five or six subjects .

Number of ways to fail the exam = fail in 3 exams + fail in 4 exams + fail in 5 exams + fail in 6 exams

= 6C3 + 6C4 + 6C5 + 6C6

= 20 + 15 + 6 +1

= 42
