Let the exam be of a total x marks.
so, according to the question,
32% of x + 16 = passing marks
This implies, passing marks= 32x/100 + 16
= 8x/25 + 16
= (8x + 400)/25...............(1)

Also according to the second part of question,
36%of x - 10 = PASSING MARKS
36x/100 - 10 = (8x + 400)/25. (using 1 equation)
9x/25 - 10 = (8x + 400)/25
(9x - 100)/25= (8x + 400)/25
=> 9x - 100 = 8x + 400. ( multiplying 25 to b/s)
=>x = 500

thus, passing marks = (8x + 400)/25. (by 1 equation)
= {8(500) + 400}/25
= {4000 + 400}/25
= 4400/25
= 176
Hence, passing marks = 176
