Let the max marks be x

Student got 125 marks and fails by 40 marks which means if he had got 125 + 40  =165 marks h would have just passed the examination.

So , 165 = 33% of x

33x/100 = 165

x = 165 * 100/33

x = 500 were the maximum marks for the examination
