The maximum mark is 525.

If the student getting pass mark is 178 + 32 = 210.

40% mark is 210. Then the 100% mark is 'X'.

To find out maximum mark is,

=> 40% of 'X' = 100%*210.

=> X = (210*100%)/40%.

=> X = 520.

Or,

If 178 marks fails by 32 marks, that means a barely-passing grade is 178 + 32 = 210 marks. We're told that the minimum passing score is 40%, so 210 is equal to 40% of the maximum marks. In other words: 210 = 0.4 x 500 = x So, the maximum score is 525.

Hope This Helps :)
