let the maximum number of marks be x

student secured 94 marks but fails by 50 marks
so, 94+50 = 144

now, 40% of x = 144

40/100×x = 144

x = 144×100/40

x = 144×5/2

x = 72×5

x = 360

Hi. The maximum number of marks is 360 marks.

Solution:

\text{Marks obtained = 94.}\\\\\text{The student failed by 50 marks. So, Marks needed to pass = 94+50 = 144 marks.}\\\\\text{But, given passing $\% \: is \: 40 \%$.}\\\\\text{Let the total marks be $x$ marks.}\\\\\text{Now, According to he question,}\\\\40 \% \: of \: x = 144\\\\\implies \dfrac{40}{100} \times x = 144\\\\\\\implies x = 144 \times \dfrac{100}{40} = 36 \times 10\\\\\\= \large \underline{\boxed{\boxed{\bold{360 \: marks}}}}

Hope it helps.
