here 40% of x means 40% marks out of total marks. 2x/5 is 40% of x which is equal to 185+15.

Let, the total marks be, 'x'

So, the pass mark is = (x*40/100)

                                 = 2x/5

According to the question it was given that Rupa was failed by 15 marks.

She obtained 185 marks

So, she had obtained(185+15) marks

                                   = 200 marks

∴ According to the conition,

2x/5 = 185+15

⇒ 2x/5 = 200

⇒ 2x = (200×5)

⇒ x = 1000/2

⇒ x = 500

So, the total marks is 500.
