let full marks be x
passing marks be y

3/10 x = y - 40
4/10 x = y + 20

1/10x = 60
x = 600

Let the maximum marks be x.

According to question:-

∴ Pass marks for A = 30 % of x + 40

= 30x/100 + 40

Pass marks of B = 40 % of x - 20

= 40x/100 - 20

∵ Pass marks for both cases are same

∴ 30x/100 + 40 = 40x/100 - 20

⇒ 40x/100 - 30x/100 = 40 + 20

⇒ 40x - 30x /100 = 60

⇒ 10x/100 = 60

⇒ 10x = 60 × 100

⇒ 10x = 6000

⇒ x = 600

∴ Maximum marks = 600

Pass marks = 30/100 × 600 + 40

= 220 Marks
