A gets 261 but still failed by 4% marks that means A scored
=40-4
=36% marks becouse the passing criteria is 40% marks.

Therefore we can say
261=[36/100]P
where P is the passing marks.
So,
P=[261x100]/36
P=725

So, the passing marks was 725
