Let '4x' be the total number of people who appeared in the exam initially.
Of then '3x' passed and 'x' failed.
Now, 48 more appeared(4x+48) and 8 more failed(x+8), hence we can say remaining 40 have passed the exam (3x+40).
But, given that ratio of pass to fail is 10:3
(3x+40)/(x+8) = 10/3
x = 40.
Therefore, 160 members appeared for the exam initially
