Step-by-step explanation:

In an examination, there are 100 questions. Each correct answer fetches 3 marks and for each incorrect answer, 1 mark is deducted. No marks are

deducted for an unattempted question. A student attempts 90 questions and scores 158 marks in total. How many questions did he get wrong?

  • Let the number of questions which are right be m.
  • So correct answers fetches him 3 marks = 3m
  • Number of attempted questions = 90
  • Therefore number of wrong answers = 90 – m
  • Now marks deducted for wrong answer = - 1 (90 – m)
  • So total marks obtained = 3m + (-1)(90 – m)
  •                          So 3m + (-1)(90 – m) = 158
  •                               3m – 90 + m = 158
  •                                   4m = 158 + 90
  •                                   4m = 248
  •                                  Or m = 248 / 4
  •                                  Or m = 62
  • Therefore number of questions that were wrong will be 90 – 62
  •                                                                                         = 28
