Question :-

In an experiment, sodium chloride reacts with sulphuric acid and evolves HCl gas. what is the result when the gas is tested with wet Litmus Paper?

Answer :-

Reaction :-

NaCl + H₂SO₄ ========> NaHSO₄ + HCl

Hence hydrogen chloride gas is evolved.

When the gas is tested with litmus paper , the litmus papers turns blue to red.

This is because :-

(i) HCl has a replaceable hydrogen ion in its molecule .

(ii) Hence it is acidic in nature.

(iii) Acids always turn wet litmus blue to red.

This were the reasons.

Hope it helps you :-)

I guess litmus paper would change to red as the salts are sodium sulfate and hcl, which are both acids.
