The first phase of 750-100 AD witnessed political instability which lead to the economic decline. The trade with the Byzantine empire declined and there was decline of internal trade as well. The examples which show that the period was of economic decline are as :

1.  The coins frequently available during the Gupta period were absent now. We do not found some many gold and silver coins in this period which clearly shows the economic bankruptcy of the time.

2.  Emergence of feudalism during this period. They salary of officials was paid in land grants as they treasury of the small kingdom was empty which lead to the feudal economy in India.
