.

In ancient times, kings had large courts, filled with ministers, poets, singers and painters.

The king treated these people with care and respect, and they too remained loyal to him.

The story is about cleverness of Tenali Raman. Raja Verma was the most famous artist

In Krishnadevraya’s court. The king loved his paintings. He was so pleased with Raja Verma

that he wanted to reward him. One day the king suddenly said to him, “Ask for anything and

it will be yours.” The gentle and shy painter did not know what to say. He did not want

anything and wanted to be left alone to carry on with his paintings. Before he could think of

giving any answer to the king made him the chief minister. This announcement gave a shock

to Raja Verma; he did not know how to refuse and thought that it would be very rude to say

no. As chief minister, Raja Verma tried his best to fulfil his duties but his plans and efforts

led to confusion. He was a painter and had never handled matters of the court. He knew he

was doing things the wrong way, but the king continued to support him. The people were

angry but never said anything to upset the king. Finally the elders decided to seek Tenali

Raman’s help.

Raman had a clever idea. He invited the king and his ministers for lunch. He asked the

town’s best carpenter to prepare a grand feast for his guests. On the decided day the food was

served beautifully and the guests started eating greedily. But in a few seconds the king and

the guests began to gasp. They all started crying that the food was too spicy, too salty and

undercooked. The king was very angry. Tenali waited for the king to calm down. Then he

told him that he the best carpenter whose work is brilliant was given the job of cooking.

The king told Raman that he may be an excellent carpenter but it does not mean he is a good

cook. Raman replied if an artist can be the chief minister why can’t a carpenter be a cook.

The king realized his mistake and the next day he sent Raja Verma back to his old job. The

king felt embarrassed, he thanked Tenali who chuckled wisely.

MORAL OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED STORY:

A work should be assigned to a person by keeping in mind his/her capabilities. A good artist is probably not a good singer. A student who is not so good in academics is probably a great future sports player. Everybody has a talent and that talent cannot be ignored just because of something that the person is unable or incapable of doing. There is quote that says that you cannot judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree.
