Fertilisation in flowering plants is referred to as double fertilisation because both the male gametes of the same microspore take part in fusion.

1. One fuses with the egg to form the diploid zygote.

2. The other fuses with the two polar nuclei (or secondary nuclei) to form the triploid primary endosperm nucleus.
