They did bus boycotts, sit-ins, marches, and mass demonstrations. They wanted to make a change, but didn't want to feed into their horrid stereotypes. They felt violence was unnecessary and it would only allow those with outdated views to use their acts of violence against them. It would allow the hateful white people to say that they are savages and other incorrect statements. The nonviolent movement tried to avoid that.
