Answer:

In Alice Walker's "Everyday Use," Dee desires the quilts simply because they would make eye-catching inflections to her new home and her new life, not because they have significance having been stitched by hand by women who came before her, worked rigid, grieved and built a life for themselves.

Everyday Use

Everyday Use is one of the most powerful short stories of the twentieth century. Written by the famous feminist writer- Alice Walker, it expresses ironically the outlook of the educated and the not- so- educated Afro-American woman.

The quilt mentioned in the story serves as a symbol for African culture. Afro-American women were identified by their 'quilting' activity. The quilts were a kind of motley woven by the women in togetherness.

It signified the bonding and sisterhood shared by the women weaving their tales of oppression and torture.

The quilt Wangero ,originally called Dee, asked for, was woven by her Grandmother Dee and her mother's sister Big Dee.

Wangero or Dee was an educated, modern, beautiful Afro-American woman who prided over her African Heritage but never indulged to live the life of the typical African woman.

The irony in her request for the quilt lay in the fact that she wanted it as a piece of priced decoration to put up in her house.

She would like to show it off to her educated visitors as a great piece of work but never delve into the great philosophy and pain that went on to making it.

Dee's mother on the other hand valued the quilt for its practical use. She wanted to give it to her shy, uneducated, partially burnt younger daughter Maggie who would actually use it.

The irony thus lies in the two completely opposite views of the value of the quilt.
