Lessing's early life included going out into nature and getting a charge out of it admirably well, until the point that her mom would advise her to stop and be a legitimate lady. Lessing lived after World War I from which his dad experienced wounds that forestalled him strolling once more.

Published in 1955,” Through the tunnel” has many cross-references to Lessing’s childhood experiences.
In her story, there is a reference to dark boys who were far away from the tourist beach which in turn tells about Lessing, who was prohibited from her own birth land – Zimbabwe, where a system of racial segregation existed from 1948 till 1990.
