Aufbau Principle : -

• The word "Aufbau" means "Building up". It is a German Word.

• According to this principle, In the ground state , the atomic orbitals are filled in order of increasing energies. That is, In the ground state the electrons occupy the lowest orbitals available to them.

• The energy of an orbital is determined by the quantum numbers n and l with the help of (n + l) rule or Bohr Bury rule.

According to this rule,

• Lower the value of (n + l) , lower is the energy of the orbital and such an orbital is filled first.

• When two orbitals have same (n + l) - value, then the orbital having lower n value is filled first because it has lower energy.

For example,

(n + l) value of 3p = 4s

That is,

3 + 1 = 4 + 0

Hence,

The electrons are filled in 3p since it has lower n value.

Sequence of filling electrons is :

1s < 2s < 2p < 3s < 3p < 4s < 3d < 4p < 5s < 4d < 5p < 6s < 4f < 5d < 6p < 7s < 5f < 6d < 7p < 8s.
