Petrol and diesel both were used to clean, because the high Volatile Organic Compounds(VOC) can easily penetrate into the porous of the particle over the parts of the engine.

The chemical compounds alkanes (paraffins), cycloalkanes (naphthenes), aromatic hydrocarbons can react with chemicals and greasy dirts in the parts and wipe off from cast iron and aluminium parts.

Coming to your point why?

Because this method economic and cost effective to cleanse the parts. Do not get into complex process, simply pour gasoline and rinse to wipe off the dirt.

Cleaning process had different procedure to clean the parts based on part material, dirt and other factors.

In Overseas many shops use a hot tank to clean parts. Various kinds of degreasing solvents, caustics or water-based detergents can be used in these tanks to clean aluminum, cast iron or both.
