Adding coefficients is used to balance a chemical equation.(Option - A)

  • Coefficients are added in front of atoms to balance their number on both sides of the reaction i.e. the reactant and the product side.
  • The number of a particular atom must be balanced on both sides of the reaction.
  • New substances cannot be added on either side of the reaction, only the atoms are rearranged in order to form a product from a particular reactant.
  • Superscripts mostly represent the charge of a molecule which is changed only in reactions involving the transfer of electrons from 1 atom to another i.e. redox reactions but the transfer of electrons is also balanced across the reaction from 1 atom to another different molecule or atom. Moreover, this is not a way of balancing.
  • Subscripts of particular molecules are fixed depicting the bonding of atoms to form the molecule and it cannot be changed during balancing a chemical equation.
