The novel is written
in English like many novels of the nineteenth century and not in a vernacular
language Bangla. The pivotal character Rajmohan’s wife Mantangini is described
as a woman of power. Unlike women of the past, she was not a submissive woman.
In course of the novel, there are narrations of various aspects such as
imprisonment in dungeons and criminal conspiracy. These were actually an
integral part of the colonial life that existed in the nineteenth century.
