Brown Ring Complex - [Fe (H2O)4 (NO) ] SO4

If NO is considered as neutral ligand oxidation state of Iron becomes +2

EAN = Z - (O.N) + 2 (C.N)

EAN = 26 - 2 + 2 ( 6)

= 24 +12

=36

Answer:

                   EAN = 36

Explanation:

GIVEN : The NO is neutral ligand in brown ring complex

TO FIND : EAN (Effective atomic number)

SOLUTION :

Brown ring complex is - [Fe (H₂O)₅ (NO)] SO₄

  EAN = Atomic number of metal + (No. of ligands x electrons donated by each ligand ) - positive oxidation state of metal

 If NO , is considered as neutral ligand , then the O.S. of Fe remains +2 therefore,

EAN = Z - (O.N) + 2 (CN)

         = 26 - 2 + 2 (6)

           = 24 + 12

            = 36
