In the C4 pathway, initial carbon fixation takes place in mesophyll cells and the Calvin cycle takes place in bundle-sheath cells. PEP carboxylase attaches an incoming carbon dioxidemolecul to the three-carbon molecule PEP, producing oxaloacetate (a four-carbon molecule).
