In Hindustani classical music, Aalaap is the same technique known as Alpana in Carnatic music.

Aalaap is an improvisation within a song for introducing a new raga and enhancing the melody of the composition.

Hindustani music experts also call it as Raag Vistaar because the singer has to stretch his voice for singing an Aalaap.

It is rarely used in modern day Indian music.
