We all have 23 pair of chromosomes individually. (total 46  chromosomes)

in sexual reproduction the chromosomes divide added to form the new cell of offspring. 23 from a single female parent and 23 from a single male parent to form a 23 pair chromosomes of a cell.

   23  +   23   =>   46

(male) (female)   (offspring)
