Given,

The molecular weight of the first member of a homologous series = 32

To Find,

The molecular weight of the third member in the series.

Solution,

A homologous series has similar chemical properties, functional group, but differ by a methylene(-CH₂-) group.

The molecular weight increases by 14 with the addition of each methylene group.

The difference in the methylene groups of the first and the third members in the homologous series will be 2.

Thus the molecular weight of the third member  = 32+14+14 =60

Henceforth, the molecular weight of the third member in the series is 60.
