The major difference between the ammeter and thevoltmeter is that the ammetermeasures the flow of current, whereas the voltmetermeasures the emf or voltageacross any two points of theelectrical circuit. ... When thecurrent flows through the coils, it becomes deflected.

Voltmeter

It is a galvanometer of very high resis- two points of a circuit. Ordinary Weston galvanometer is converted into a voltmeter by connecting a high tance used to measure the potential difference between that it can measure the potential difference directly in volts. Voltmeter is always connected in parallel with resistance in series with its coil. Its scale is so graduated the points of the circuit between which the potential difference is to be measured.

Ammeter

It is a galvanometer of very low resistance so made that it may measure the current flowing in a circuit. An ammeter is a shunted moving coil galvanometer. Its scale is so graduated that it can measure the current directly in amperes. Ammeter is always connected in series with the circuit.
