It is quite true Shyama, the narrator is a benevolent, good doer; he is not a manipulative interloper. He was genuinely concerned about getting Ranga married as he was of marriageable age. Ratna was an orphan girl who needed support. The narrator saw in Ranga and Ratna a perfect match as both had a lacuna which they could fill with each other.

The clever plan that he made with Shastri was carried with good intentions; not to harm anyone. The end result of his efforts was quite sweet; Ranga and Ratna were happily married.

In conclusion we can say that Shyama was a benevolent and good doer who did service to society with his good deeds.
