In chemistry, when we say the word 'solution' after a compound, does that mean that a given compound is mixed in with water? For example potassium iodide solution, is potassium iodide which is crystallized white powder mixed with water since it's a solution?

A solution is made up of a solute and solvent. So when we say solution then the solute can be made up of any solute and solvent but in most cases the water is the solvent . But water is not the only solvent , the solvent can be any liquid in which the solute is dissolved.
hope it helps..
