Writing from my own experience

Trust me on this one: take Sanskrit without doubt - and yes, Hindi is my mother tongue. Behind the scenes story:

I joined a school in class 7th where compulsory Sanskrit was taught from class 5th till 8th. Joining in mid-seesion and knowing nothing about cramming grammar rules - I failed miserably in unit tests and somehow passed in mid-terms even though I was > 80% scorer overall.

I was literally waiting for class 9th to come where I would get the option to choose Hindi. But in the greed to get good rank (yeah, what dreams school kids have !), I started cramming hard - all शब्द रूप (word formations), धातु रूप (verb formations) along with लकार(tense) rules, the basics of Sanskrit. Naturally, hard work did bear some good results - I landed up in 70s. But I was still disinterested in Sanskrit.

In class 8th, I got very lucky to get a good teacher! She used to give many grammar tasks in class as if they were numericals in maths - there was a competition among classmates as to who can solve it faster. In class, focus was also given to creative writing apart from traditional filling in the missing word/blank.

It changed my whole perspective towards Sanskrit:

there is logic involved in these grammar rules as is in grammar of any other languages'. So instead of trying to just rote learn the rules, I started a bit of exploring by attempting to write sentences beyond the scope of the course and get it corrected in class. Naturally most of them were grammatically incorrect, but never mind - was I perfect while learning Hindi in the first place ? It was quite fun and it became a challenge for me to master - hell, why can't I learn another language being a bilingual already !

By the end of class 8, my Sanskrit performance was still lower than Hindi - but I gave it a try and opted for it. It was a wise decision.

In class 9th and 10th, the quality of literature stories improved - taking slokas from even Gita which was fascinating. My interest grew further and by the end of class 10th, I was scoring perfect in my exams.

Important points for those who are not motivated till now

I passed class 10 (CBSE) when grading system was just introduced. So those who took Hindi landed up in A2 grade at the most while half the batch who took Sanskrit got A1.

It is very difficult to get good marks in Hindi in CBSE (at least till 6-7 years ago) - as if CBSE either wants us to stay away from Hindi or evaluators are still stuck in 80s era where 70% was considered a good score !

Moreover, the exam pattern of Hindi was very boring - all you have to do was read stories thoroughy, cram names of writers and their biography, write big essays and letters which are "subjectively" checked. The exam pattern of Sanskrit was objective with fill in the blanks, one word answers and the like - no opiniated subjective questions.

Taking Sanskrit also has the advantage that you learn a new language - you can understand some (or most) of the things that pandits speak during rituals in Hindu festivals: the feeling is awesome ! You can also attempt to read the holy scriptures like Gita in Sanskrit (it is very hard indeed!) instead of interpretations by other writers.

To conclude, I am not against taking Hindi, but honestly - you are good enough in Hindi to read those literature stories on your own in your free time than taking the pain to struggle hard and then get average grades.

One more thing - I took Sanskrit in 11th and 12th standard too, and still read slokas in my free time :)
