In classless addressing, the prefix length defines the mask.

Explanation:

There are two schemes that identify IP addresses

  1. Classful Addressing Scheme
  2. Classless Addressing Scheme

We use subnetting to reduce the waste of IP addresses in blocks. But the waste of IP addresses in a block in classless addressing is lower than Classful subnetting. Blocks that do not belong to any class are used in this variable length.

The major difference between classful and classless addressing is that classless addressing makes it more efficient to allocate IP addresses than classful addressing.
