Compared to Terence Powderly of The Knights of Labor, Samuel Gompers  of the American Federation of Labor  often preferred negotiations  rather than strikes.

In the United States, the son of Irish immigrants, Powderly, became the railway worker in Pennsylvania at the age of 13. At the age of 17, he became a mechanist's trainee and he worked in that trade till the age of 28.

He joined the Machinists and Blacksmiths Union in 1871 and grew rapidly within the organization. In 1874, he joined the Secret Order of the Knights of Labor, in which he proceeded fast.
