Copper is one of the transition elements and thus exhibits variable oxidation states. It has two valencies: +1 and +2 and the corresponding atoms are termed as Cuprous (+1 valency) and Cupric (+2 valency). ... Copper has an atomic number of 29 and its electronic configuration is 1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2, 3p6, 3d10, 4s1.

Some elements like copper and iron exhibits more than one valency. That is they have variable valencies.

Generally the name of the element end in 'ous' for lower valency and end in 'ic' for higher valency.

The valency of cuprous is 1 and the valency of cupric is 2.

The valency of ferrous is 2 and the valency of ferric is 3.

as both are transition elements both show variable valencies. cupric show +2 valency and ferric +3
