In David Copperfield, which charactars represent love and truth?
Answers
Answer:
Two characters that represent truth and love are David’s housekeeper Pegotty and aunt Betsy Trotwood. These two women are David’s guardians and protectors at different times. While his mother dies and abandons him and Dora is weak and silly (and also dies), these two women are strong. Pegotty cares for David even after he goes away to school, despite his weakling mother’s lack of ability to protect him. She also teaches him what love really means, sticking by him longer than she needs to and making him part of her family.
Betsy Trotwood is also a strong woman. While she may seem like sort of a caricature, she takes David in and teaches him the meaning of unconditional love just as Pegotty did. She is not perfect, and does get swindled, but she has a good heart and speaks her mind.
Both of these women add strength to David’s life, and teach him to be a man. While he is constantly disappointed and abused, these women are the stalwarts and loving mother figures in his life.
Agnes Wickfield states the following in chapter 35:
"I hope that simple love and truth will be stronger in the end. I hope that real love and truth are stronger in the end than any evil or misforture in the world."
This quote relates to the suffering that David has faced throughout his life, as he has been ill used and abandoned. Through it all, he continues to stay good, care about people and think the best of them.
