The choice of tip speed ratio depends on several factors:
High tip speed ratio is desirable as it may result in high rotational speed of shaft, in drag type of wind turbines the tip speed ratio is greater than 1
Tip speed ratio= speed of rotor÷wind speed
Tip speed ratio is also defined as the ratio of tangential speed of the tip of a blade and the actual speed of the wind, if tip speed ratio is greater than 1 it may result in high rotational speed of the shaft.
