In dumas method for the estimation of nitrogen, 0.3g of an organic compound gave 50ml of nitrogen collected at 300k temperature and 715mm pressure. calculate the percentage composition of nitrogen in the compound. (aqueous tension at 300k=15mm

mass of the subs= 30g.

vol.of N2=50ml
room temp =300k
vapour pressure of water at 300K=15mm
actual pressure = 715-15=700mm Hg

Convert the Vol. at Experimental conditions to vol.at STP.

P1 V1/T1=P2 V2/T2

700X50/300 = 760xV2/273

=41.9cm^3.

Convert the volume at STP into Mass.

222400cm^3  of N2 at STP weight 28g.

28X41.9/22400g

d %of N2

mass of N2 at STP/mass of the substance takenX100

28x41.9x100/22400x0.3=17.46
