When the Mughal empire was lingering to its decay, there emerged the three strong political organisations in Hyderabad, Bengal and Avadh. These are also known by the name of regional states.

The autonomous kingdom of Hyderabad was founded by Nizam-ul-Mulk in 1724. He was one of the most powerful nobles of the time. When Mughal empire was lingering, he established his base at Hyderabad and later declared its independence. He took efficient administrative steps and made Hyderabad a strong and peaceful state.

The autonomous kingdom of Avadh was founded by Sadat Khan Burhan-ul-Mulk, the governor of Avadh. He declared its independence from the Mughals. He suppressed the rebel Zamindars and took various efficient measures to make Avadh a strong power.

The autonomous kingdom of Bengal was founded by Murshid Quli Khan and Alivardi Khan. They also declared the Independence of Bengal after the weakening of Mughal empire. The suppressed the internal and external dangers and made Bengal a strong power.

All the above states were not only politically strong but they were economically good. Trade and commerce was at brisk and cultural activities were patronized. It on the basis of these strong regional kingdoms that some historians regarded 18th century as age of progress.
