In Engel v. Vitale the court ruled that prayer in schools was unconstitutional because the prayer was a religious activity. The Justice Hugo Black ruled that it violates the Establishment of US Constitution which prohibits the establishment of religion by Congress and thus focuses on separation of state and Church.
