in English we have gentleman but why not gentlewoman

The word "Gentleman" from that era refers to a man who does not himself have to work for a living. ... There are gentlewoman, but it's a much more formal term, generally meaning a woman of good family or breeding, whereas gentleman has become more of a widely used slang word.
