a.)I think the bulb should not touch the sides of beaker bcz we have to record the temperature of boiling water not the beaker and due to conduction the beaker also gets heated and if the bulb of thermometer touches the side of beaker, it will also record the temperature of the beaker.
b.) Pieces of pumice stone are added to water before boiling to avoid bumping of water when the temperature rises. When water boils it releases energy as bubbles and when we add pieces of pumice stone it gives lots of surface area for bubbles to form and release the energy gradually.
