Hey mate,here is your answer

a) when you are heating on a under a flame or on a stove , the very bottom of the beaker is much hotter than the rest of the solution is not very well stirred . In such condition the temperature obtained on thermometer is wrong one because it's of beaker and solution , not just of solution .

b) pieces of pumice stone are added to water before heating to avoid bumping of liquid during the temperature increases . When water boils , it releases energy in the form of bubbles . Sometimes this bubbles formation do not take place due to which the water can super heat and may explode . Adding pieces of pumice stones gives lots of surface area for bubbles to form and release the energy easily without any bumping of boiling water .
