In Fig. 4.60, AD bisects ∠A, AB = 12 cm, AC = 20 cm and BD = 5 cm, determine CD.

SOLUTION :

GIVEN :  AD bisects ∠ A and

AB = 12 cm, AC = 20 cm, and BD = 5 cm.

Since AD is the bisector of  ∠ A

then,  AB/AC = BD/DC

[The internal bisector of an angle of a triangle divides the opposite side internally in the ratio of the sides containing the angle]

12/20 = 5/DC

12 x DC = 20 x 5

DC = 100/12

DC = 8.33 cm

Hence,CD = 8.33 cm.
