Given : In Fig. 8.60, ray AB and CD intersect at O.

 

To find : (i) Determine y when x = 60°

(ii) Determine x when y = 40°.

 

Solution :  

From figure we have , ∠AOC = 2x , ∠BOC = y

(i)  when x = 60°

∠AOC + ∠BOC = 180°     (Linear pair)

2x + y = 180°

2 (60°) + y = 180°

120°  + y = 180°

y = 180° - 120°

 y = 60°  

Hence y is  60°  .

 

(ii)  when y = 40°

∠AOC + ∠BOC = 180° (Linear pair)

2x + y = 180°

2x + 40° = 180°

2x = 180° - 40°

2x = 140°

x  = 140°/2

x = 70°

Hence , x is  70°  .
