area of square = a^2
                        =  40*40
                        = 1600 cm^2
area of triangle = 1/2*b*h
                         = 1600/2
                         = 800 cm^2
area of shaded region = area of square - area of triangle
                                    = 1600-800
                                    = 800 cm^2

area of triangle ABE = 1/2*base*height
                                = 1/2*AB*EF
                                = 1/2*40*40
                                = 20*40
                                = 800 cm^2

area of quadrilateral ABCD = lenght*breadth
                                           = 40*40
                                           = 1600 cm^2

area of shaded region  = area of quadrilateral ABCD - area of triangle ABE
                      ADECB  = 1600 - 800
                                    = 800 CM^2
