so as D is the midpoint of AB and DE ll BC, E is the midpoint of AC. that means AE=EC ⇒ x=5cm

According to midpoint theorem, "The line segment in a triangle joining the midpoint of two sides of the triangle is said to be parallel to its third side and is also half of the length of the third side.”So, DE is the half of BC

so DE =(1/2)×BC ⇒ 6 = (1/2)×y ⇒y = 12cm

so x=5cm and y=12cm
