SOLUTION

In triangle ABC

(5x)² + (5)² = AC²

25² + 25 = AC²

In triangle EDB

(5cm + 2x)² + (4x)² = ED²

25 + 20x + 4x² + 16² = ED²

as ED = AC

25 + 20X + 20X² = 25X² + 25

5(4X² + 4X) = 25X²

X(4X + 4) = 5X²

4 = 5X - 4X

So 4 = 5X - 4X

So x = 4

AE = 4 cm

CD = 2x4 = 8 cm

AB = 2x5 cm = 20 cm

AC² = 20²  + 5²

AC = √400 + 25

= √425

= 5√17
