Question :

In figure shown the acceleration versus time graph of a car. If it starts from rest, find the distance travelled by car in time 0 to 4 s .

Answer :

Distance travelled by the car from 0 to 4 seconds is 24 m.

Given :

Acceleration of the car from 0 to 2 seconds = 2 m/s^2

Acceleration of the car from 2 to 4 seconds = 1 m/s^2

To find :

The distance travelled by the car

Solution :

We know, from an acceleration-time graph , the area covered in the graph gives the velocity of the body.

Hence , area of the first rectangle

= l × b

= 2 × 2

= 4

Area of the second rectangle

= l × b

= 1 × (4-2)

= 1 × 2

= 2

Hence, the velocity of the body = area of the first rectangle + area of the second rectangle

= 4 + 2

= 6 m/s

We also know that ,

Velocity = Distance / Time

=> 6 = Distance / 4

=> Distance = 6 × 4

= 24

Hence, distance travelled by the car from 0 to 4 seconds is 24 m.
