Robert Whittaker, a scientist who began grouping the living organisms into different categories. The organisms were grouped based on certain characters.

The organisms like Chlamydomonas and Chlorella has been included in Protists and not in algae in the five kingdom classification.

This is because the criteria of classification changed. Whittaker proposed that the organisms should be classified based on the mode of nutrition, structure of the cell, source of nutrition, reproduction, body organization, interrelationship.

So, they were kept in Protists not in algae.
