Rhizoids are a part of gametophytic stage, so they are haploid(n)

whereas foot,seta,capsule are the parts of sporophytic stage ,so

they are diploid (2n).

Hence ,  gametophyte=n=20 chromosomes

foot,seta,capsule=2n=40 chromosomes.

2n= 40 chromosomes

Explanation:

  • The Funaria belongs to the Bryophyte division of the plant kingdom. The life cycle of the Funaria is divided into two phases: haploid gametophyte and diploid sporophyte.
  • The rhizoids are the root-like structures present in the gametophytic phase, therefore, maintains haploidy.
  • The capsule, foot and seta are the structures which grow during the diploid sporophyte stage.
  • Since the rhizoids are haploid (n) and contain 20 chromosomes, therefore, the diploid structures( 2n) will contain 2x 40= 40 chromosomes each cell.

Thus, 2n= 40 chromosomes are correct.
